To this day, I don't know if it was a dream or if this really happened.
Reality or just a nightmare, there's no way to tell: I've asked my parents about it but they don't remember anything... mind you, I was about 3 years old when this occured so maybe they just forgot.
I was severly asthmatic when I was young.
My mom recounts bringing me into the ER once -or was that twice? - as I had turned blue from not breathing. I remember weekly visits to the evil doctor who poked me with big cold needles in the arm, no matter how much I tried to punch him in the face. My parents got told to move out of the city or the pollution would kill me (we moved when I was 5).
In my room was a humidifier. Early 70's required pretty much everything to look like it fell out of a spaceship' arse, so this aqua-blue plastic flying-saucer shaped contraption sat on the corner of my dresser, releasing silent cold steam towards my bed every night.
Never minded it much until "the incident".
I woke up in the middle of the night and the steam had turned to poison. Hot, toxic smoke pumping away at my face - at least that was the rationale - and I started to SCREAM.
I remember running down the short hall to my parent's bedroom and standing there in the open doorway, screaming and screaming at the top of my lungs, getting more desperate with each passing second that they didn't react. I could see both of them there, under the covers, their backs turned to me in the darkened room.
Were my screams so loud they had become silent? Had I been robbed of my voice? Why wasn't anyone helping me?
My cheeks were wet from tears and my legs shaking with the effort of jumping up and down, my throat raw from terror - that's it, I had become invisible and I would die.
To this day, I think that this incident is what turned me into a freak.
I was three years old.
And conscious of the fact that I was was mortal.
I don't often share personal things like this but thought you should know a bit more about me, since you seem to want to hang around for the goofy stuff - everyone needs balance. OK my head is pounding again, off to bed I go... just wish it was cold and raining outside cuz this is evil torture. Gaahk!

Thank you for sharing this with us. This post makes me feel like I know you a little bit better now =)
Also, the migrane. Babe, you better get that checked. It happens so often you should really do something about it. It might lead to something bigger =(
Hopefully not, just be cautious though....
I STILL have asthma. It's a pain in the ass, I tell you. Especially in winter. If I want to go running or do any other kind of strenuous physical activity I have to get myself nicely drugged up first, and the drugs make me shaky and irritable.
Although, I'm usually shaky and irritable most of the time, regardless.
Sweetie, it was probably a dream - some of the stuff that my kids come out with after their nightmares is truly disturbing and I don't let them watch freaky stuff on TV either!
Have you thought about acupuncture to get those migraines shifted? It really works.
Hope you are feeling better soon
x
wow...I cant say I've ever had a migraine, but I hear they are really bad...hope there's something you can do...
Get that head checked now! not because of that freaky humidifier;) but the pain!! Ugh. Poor you. No fun. Actually, I had 2 migraines in the last week. Food related. Bleh!
So I can totally relate. The pain just drains u. I hope you're feeling better now.
understanding mortality at such an early age must have been nothing short of traumatic!! Thanks for sharing this with us and I hope you feel better.
CD, I did get it checked out and am on preventative meds but sometimes... the muscles just freak out and this is what happens. Oh, to have a full-time masseuse... *bliss*
Frank, did you ever check out the treatments by injection? Not sure if it's still available but it worked for me... saved my life actually. Those inhalers suck ass :-(
Sian, I'm sure it was a nightmare cuz I have no other explanation... just not sure why I've remembered it all my life. Maybe acupuncture would help for that too??
Daring, you are sooo lucky. VERY lucky.
Lola, it must have been a Montreal barometric pressure thing - too many people I know were hit badly with it this weekend. Creepy.
Toughgirl, now you know why I'm a bit of a freak :-D
Migraine's suck. I hope yours goes away quickly.
That is quite a realization to have at three. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around mortality.
Ah, that explains everything.
It really does.
See, parents are supposed to be there to fix that. They're supposed to make the scariest situations seem like a small piece of a huge birthday cake has fallen on the floor. They're supposed to convince you you're immortal when you've encountered your first taste of near death.
But some don't and we're left feeling like we have nobody to rely on but ourselves. Nobody's looking out for us and the world is a scary place.
I always wondered why you were similar to me in that sense.
Katie, considering what you've been through lately it's understandable...
Prin, yep. For sure it was a nightmare but it marked me for life. How unfair!
Wow... This is amazing... I have a similar story... I always wondered why I was a freak, and now I know... It's because of that herd of cows that were chasing me one night when I was about 4 too... And when I went to scream in parents room in the middle of the night, I was followed by what I thought we zombie skeleton... Only to realize that these were just my bros and sis that I had woken up... :-O
BYE
MAD
P.S.: BTW, thanks for sharing this... And everything else on the Bubblegum Diaries... You're my inspiration... From one freak to another... ;-)
