Six degrees

Six degrees celcius, this is what May 31st is all about as I write this. Oh, with gusts of freezing wind and the occasional splatter of rain, just for the heck of it.

Somewhere over in Ontario apparently got snow this morning.

Has there been a colder or crappier month of May?

I didn't think so.

It's been a quiet weekend, nothing exciting to report. Vegas has the lurgy and my back is still out so we've limited ourselves to a few movies, ate leftovers, packed some boxes, slept, read and the like. No guilt there either since the weather has been mostly shitty the past five days. Oh and we finally sold our big portable AC unit today, yeey!

Um, I've added a few new pics on the snapshots blog for those who care...

I also need to bring my Nikon to the shop for a professional cleaning this week since all recent pics show horrid dust spots. Tried cleaning it myself to no avail so... kachinng! Ah well, I've had the camera for two and half years now, it's time to give it some TLC.

Crossing the days off the calendar...

Home owners in 25 days.

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!

*grabs hold of self*

It's my youngest brother's bday tomorrow, June 1st. This month will also celebrate Vegas, both my parents, my step-mom and a handful of friends. It's also father's day and add to that our moving day - really a bad time to be out of work. I hope most will be happy with just a card full of love and good wishes...

The best sloppy joes evar!

YEAAAH! Finally got my hands on the coveted recipe, been fighting a hankering for the stuff for weeks now and tonight... Aaaah.

*satisfaction*

I still can't believe Vegas never had a sloppy joe before and by the way he nearly licked his plate clean I think the repas was a success... Specially since it was accompanied by a glass of red wine and capped with home-made ice cream sammiches (Smoosh a thick layer of French Vanilla ice cream between two Pillsbury Chocolate Chunk cookies, baked soft, then freeze for a couple hours to let the flavours marry).

A thousand calories never tasted so good :-)

For the curious, here's my (addictive!) sloppy joe recipe:

Brown a pound or two of lean ground beef in a pan.

Meanwhile, in another pan, melt 2 generous tablespoons of butter and throw in a couple of thickly sliced onions (separate the rings). Let the onions soften a bit, then add a sliced lemon - seeds removed -, 3/4 cup water, a teaspoon of sugar, a couple tablespoons of white vinegar, a generous dollop of dijon mustard, salt and pepper to taste.

Let simmer for a bit (10 minutes?), then dump in the cooked ground beef, add two or three squirts of ketchup and a couple tablespoons of worchestershire sauce. Remove the lemon slices, simmer on low for about 15 mins and serve on warm semi-toasted hamburger buns.

It's not a precise science and you'll more or less end up with the same recipe time after time but you can adjust the ingredients to your taste. It's tangy, it's spicy, it's creamy and it's bleddy gorgeous!

I might have leftovers for breakfast tomorrow morning, he he.

Time for a diversion:
Friday night's silly pink tongues, Exhibit A, my girl Maika:

Exhibit B, Miley Cyrus:

I don't know about you, but I'd rather be licked by my dog any day.

*yeccchhh*

Wishing you all a merry Friday night, be good and if you can't be good, be original!

Things to love and appreciate

..Listening to the rain slapping against window panes, while inside it is warm and dry and your loved ones are tucked in for the night, safe and sound.

...Tiger balm and painkillers that work. Bliss.

...Not having to get up to the sound of a blaring alarm clock every morning and not having to follow anyone's schedule but your own. Über-bliss.

...Hot tea and McVittie's Digestives.

||| puuuurrrrr |||

After yesterday's meltdown I had no choice but to cool my heels today and you know, I think a few more days of this and my back will be on the mend. At least I wasn't bawling with pain today, thank the lord. Drugs yey drugs!

Vegas helped by taking the big ugly piece o'furniture down to the sidewalk this morning, where it now sits in the rain waiting for tomorrow's garbage truck.

Good flippin' riddance.

The other piece, the one that got spray-painted, will be used in our basement or in the garage to store mouse bait or whatever. It stinks, it's an eyesore but it will serve me as a reminder to STOP and THINK before embarking on a stupid mission.

Reminds me of this classic joke:

When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ballpoint pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat the problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion to develop a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to 300°C.

The Russians used a pencil.

He he.

I need to get a new passport tomorrow, mine expires in August and lord knows once we move I won't have a head to think with nor a bag to put it in.

*adds task to the list*

Now if I were really crazy, I would add "eat breakfast" and "brush teeth" to it too, so that I get extra pleasure from crossing crap out. Wow. That's actually a brilliant idea...

Um, yeah. I think I better go to bed now, I'm really losing it.

Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

Don't attempt any "art projects" if a) you're in too much pain to think straight and b) you don't know what the hell you're doing. Oh and c) if you don't have the space to execute said art project.

So it's cold and raining today and for the next two days, at least. I have these two night tables clogging up our living room so decided what the heck, yes my back is in excruciating pain but things need to get done, I can't wait for the rain to stop so I'll just spray-paint the furniture right here, in my appartment...

There, stuff is on a big sheet to protect the floor, the balcony door is open so there is some air blowing into the room. Good.

Apply coat of primer, only have enough for the small piece and four doors. That's OK, will do one at a time... this is going pretty well, yes. Take pics for the "show and tell".

Now, apply black spray paint... Ooops it's a bit messy... Fuck, what is all this dog hair everywhere, it's sticking to every painted surface! Nooo! And why is this so painful on the trigger finger? Ack!

Cough
Cough

This stuff stinks, there's clouds of it everywhere!

Oh-oh. Those clouds... floated everywhere... absolutely everywhere and deposited a thin film of black soot on every square inch of our place from top to bottom. Floors. Carpets. Tables. Sofas. Books. TVs. In the bedroom, all the way back into the kitchen. The freshly-bathed dogs are grimy from black spray-paint soot.

FUCKING NIGHTMARE!!

Of all the days to be dealing with a giant mess... vaccuumed everywhere, didn't do any good. Mopped the floors, it just spreads. Pledge for the wood, Windex for everything else, ran through an entire roll of paper towels before sitting down and weeping. So. Not. Fair.

My lower back feels like it's being lanced with hot pokers.

I blew my nose and the tissue turned black.

The worst? Fucking piece of furniture needs a second coat of paint to look decent! Plus, those dog hairs aren't going anywhere, they're part of the surface now. And I still have the BIG piece to do, and I'm out of primer, out of paint and out of fucking patience with this mess.

I might have to chalk this one up to one giant mistake and toss the lot onto the sidewalk for the garbage truck to haul away. Honestly, I can't deal with this shit. So it cost me about $60 for everything plus a mother of all backaches and mountain of frustration, well c'est la vie - they can't all be winners.

Just want to put this shit behind me.

Hope you're all having a much better day than I am.

Can't be difficult!

What is...

Childhood:
the period of human life intermediate between the idiocy of infancy

and the folly of youth - two removes from the sin of manhood
and three from the remorse of age.
~Ambrose Bierce, The Devil's Dictionary, 1911

Much ado about... much

Today's snapshot:
  • Annual dentist appointment: clean bill of health, yey!
  • Groceries: we get to eat again, yey!
  • Antique chairs delivered to re-upholstering lady: we get funky chairs this summer, yey!
  • Various phone calls (vet, notary, drugstore, etc): taking care of business, yey!
  • Shopping: found cool Paul Frank gear for me and some bday prezzies for Vegas, yey!
  • Long walk in green field: dogs all exercised, yey!
Now, someone please explain to me why my "to do" list is now twice as long as the one I had yesterday?! It's like freaking cockroaches, the more you kill the more you find crawling across the floor!

How the hell I ever found time to hold down a full-time job before, I'll never know.

Off to make dinner (spicy greek shrimp casserole & fresh ciabatta loaf), I was looking forward to a nice quiet evening with my man but apparently he has to work. From home, while I sit there and rot. I guess 9 to 6 pretty much every day at the office just doesn't cut it anymore.

Awesome.

Sigh.

Green thumbs and sleepy toes

When we were little, in the good days before "The Divorce", way back when we were too young to notice we were poor and that the parental unit didn't get along, my mom maintained a huge garden to help with the food bills.

It always impressed me how perfect it was and how much stuff grew in there - I guess when you're little, everything seems big but I could swear it was a sight to behold.

I remember fresh spinach and crunchy rhubarb, baby carrots and orange pumpkins, I suppose we had string beans but mercifully I was spared of those, lettuce and radishes and zucchinis and everything in between. She made jams and pickles, she baked bread and made pies from scratch and the house always smelled like mom, like home.

Now I'm finally going to have my own garden in a few weeks, after year of waiting and pining for one.

Um, I have NO IDEA what to do with it!

I know I've got green thumbs somewhere under these white city gloves...

Am very grateful to my mom for offering to come spend a few of her vacation days in July in our new place, she'll help me plant stuff and explain what goes where and why. Since it's an organic garden, the bugs will probably freak me out when weeding but ya know, I'll have to get used to bugs and spiders and all the fun country stuff I suppose.

Spiders. UGH.

Speaking of protein, I have to hop over to the grocery store now to get dinner fixins... Ze husband is happy with "meat and two veg" so let's see what I can come up with, LOL!

It's been a nonstop busy day but despite the sleepless night thanks to moronic loud neighbors, I'm damn happy and it's only getting better. Freedom... It's so close I can taste it! And like they say: I'll sleep when I'm dead.

I'm turning into one of those medical freaks that has to learn to live with chronic pain, apparently. Gaaah! And the headache meds only make me nauseous and turn my bones to jiggly jello, how am I supposed to function like this!

*gripe gripe gripe*

I blame the chocolate stout I had last night.

Apparently a few sips was too much!

Anyhoo. It's a glorious warm summery day and we're off to have coffee with our friend Curly, then we need to pick up some pieces of furniture in two places before dropping everything off at the locker and calling it a day.

And then we're done with craigslist and kijiji for now (in theory... unless something super awesome comes up... LOL).

I have another project to attack this week and I can't wait to get my hands on it! Of course I'll post before and after pics for you... it's a low tv stand and matching end table in wood veneer that we got from a grannie for $45, quite garish 70's style, but I see the end-product in my head and it will be lovely. They will be transformed into unique and funky night tables with style!

*pauses for dizzy spell to go away*

Speaking of photos, did I post one of our new house yet?

*alzheimer's moment*

Yesterday one of the duvet covers completely ripped in the dryer. The seaming on one side was torn a bit from wear and tear (damn delicate egyptian cotton, merrr) but the tumble-dry completely annihilated it - so I put my sewing machine to good use and fixed the damn thing since we cannot afford new linens at this point.

And it came out pretty nice, if I do say so myself! Almost like new, so it'll be good for a while yet. Yey! Today I get to fix a rip in one of Vegas' favorite shirts. Was I born to be a house-maker, or what? Hehe.

Well. That's about all I have for now, gotta run and haveagoodsundayeveryone!

*snicker*

So, so wrong...

Where do I find me some of these yummies? LOL

My head is throbbing... I hope today is better than yesterday, which was a hot breezy daze of pain and dizziness. I managed to finish the laundry, bathe and brush the dogs, tidy up and make dinner but that's about it.

Bleh! I hate wasting precious days, I tell you.

So aujourd'hui... Am meeting some ex-colleagues for lunch (haven't seen them since I got fired!) then off to Costco to return some items I ordered online - dumb idea, do not attempt - so between that and a few other errands I suspect the day will melt away like butter in the sun.

In five weeks, the house is ours.

OK not ours, mostly the bank's but still!

*butterflies*

I have no freaking clue when to start packing for real, or where to put full boxes. Or how one goes to pack in an organized fashion - besides a bunch of books, we use pretty much everything so what gets packed when?! I haven't moved in a decade, and back then I had so little furniture it barely counted as a move...

Am also scared that the movers will break or damage our furniture... we have many big and fragile pieces (antiques) and even if the company has insurance it would still be a shame to see damage and a bitch to get things back in order...

I know, I know!

"Quit worrying about the wrong things!" LOL

I plan to make sausage, shroom and feta-stuffed portebellos for dinner tonight, figure Vegas and I deserve a little celebratory dinner "just because".

Sometimes, just being alive, happy and grateful for these two things is all the reason you need.

Cheers!

I love these things

Vegas read me this story of "amazing coincidence" last night:

In the 19th century, the famous horror writer, Egdar Allan Poe, wrote a book called 'The narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym'. It was about four survivors of a shipwreck who were in an open boat for many days before they decided to kill and eat the cabin boy whose name was Richard Parker. Some years later, in 1884, the yawl, Mignonette, foundered, with only four survivors, who were in an open boat for many days. Eventually, the three senior members of the crew, killed and ate the cabin boy. The name of the cabin boy was Richard Parker.

I mean, what are the odds, eh?

Turns out if you google strange coincidences, they pile up pretty fast... Whoda thunkit?

Here's another gem:

In Detroit sometime in the 1930s, a young (if incredibly careless) mother must have been eternally grateful to a man named Joseph Figlock. As Figlock was walking down the street, the mother's baby fell from a high window onto Figlock. The baby's fall was broken and both man and baby were unharmed. A stroke of luck on its own, but a year later, the very same baby fell from the very same window onto poor, unsuspecting Joseph Figlock as he was again passing beneath. And again, they both survived the event. (Source: Mysteries of the Unexplained)

Reality is sometimes stranger than fiction, I tell you...

Today a bird almost flew into my face, after one of my dogs ran bang-on straight onto my knees (she normally dodges at the last moment). Ow. Other than that it's been a most productive day and I am pleased - hmm is that what happens when you get up at 8am? LOL

I don't know how to dress anymore. Seriously. This morning was near freezing and tomorrow is supposed to be sweltering. This place is fucked.

Bonus news bullet:

Vegas' employer hosted another massive round of layoffs today, their second one this year.

So far he's dodged the bullet six times, I hope his lucky star holds out long enough for us to get solid on our feet in our new place... The thought of me working for an employer again makes me want to stick a fork in my eye - I can't do it, I just can't. Suffered three layoffs and one firing, it's enough. I need to earn my own money now, my own way.

Failure is not an option!

On that note, time for jammies and catching up on blogs, need to let this dinner settle (tortilla in a hot dry pan, lather generously with dijon, sprinkle grated cheese, add cooked broccoli, fold and let the whole thing melt and crisp - serve with a bit of sour cream and a side of salad).

Because I luvs ya

I started writing a link-list of all the blogs I'd love to give the below award to, but being efficient (read: lazy), I'd rather just put it on here and mention that if you're on my blog-roll (right-hand side of my blog, if you scroll down a bit) then it's cuz you make my day, I love reading you and here you go!
Please accept this award and thank you for blogging the way you do!

Speaking of efficient, I think that finally getting enough sleep is starting to show... Have enough energy today to tackle quite a few thing that I've been putting off and it feels gooood!

Even if the little bitch-doggy ran away this morning... had me panicked for a good while... turns out she had made her way back to the car across two fields and a road under construction while I was looking for her half a mile away... GAAH!

At least the mirror Vegas and I traveled to go get last night is making us happy - this baby stands almost six feet tall and is just gorgeous!

Our new bedroom is huge and has a lot of big corners to fill so it's perfect, plus we got it for a song ($100!) - it's quite strange to be able to see yourself from head to toe, and either that mirror is playing nice or I'm not as fat as I thought I was... hmm.

I don't think I can stuff any more furniture in this place... thank beejus we move in five weeks! EEEEK!! Does this mean no more craigslist? And that I have to start packing at some point?

No more reading books while sipping tea in the middle of the afternoon?

Oh, wait. I rarely do that anyways...

Rats.

Parting reminder: Don't forget to vote on the poll and do enjoy your blog award!

Mystery of the missing bra: solved!

Just to show you how uninteresting life around these parts has been lately (except for the occasional kijiji and craigslist finds, which you're no doubt sick of hearing about), I'll tell you about the Vanishing Bra.

See, last week the husband and I had a bit of a midday jaunt in the bedroom, if you know what I mean (nudge nudge, wink wink) and since then I could not for the life of me find my black bra.

All I remember was Vegas tossing it off to the side somewhere - and then I spent days looking high and low for the damn thing.

It wasn't in the bed, nor behind or under it
Under dressers was it not
Looked in the hamper, under every bit
Came up empty-handed, mad and hot

How can a freaking bra disappear in a small bedroom?

Like, WTF?

Well this morning as I was pawing through my underwear drawer my fingers touched something out of place. I tugged at the fabric and of course there was the culprit, buried under panties like a guilty dog.

Moments like these, I wonder if I'm going crazy or if this place is haunted by evil elves. Gaaah! In any case I'm relieved, as I really need new bras and this is one of the only three that still fit.

Somewhat.

Am I the only woman who finds bra shopping frustrating and tortuous?

Anyhoo. Hope you're all enjoying the "free Monday", I'm off to make a pot of borscht and hope the period cramps stop making my knees buckle.

They can't all be perfect

But even if it's pissing down with rain, it's still a lovely day.

Nothing like getting drenched walking in warm humid rain, coming home and slipping into dry PJ's in the early afternoon, catching up on an amazing book while sipping hot tea.

If only the wet dogs didn't reek so bad, but oh well - c'est la vie!

Breakfast of the gods

I could kill for a warm stack of these right now.

Drenched in maple syrup.

But it's bedtime and Vegas said it was too late to make pancakes.

Boo.

Awe!

Vegas isn't a happy camper today... Air Canada managed to lose his suitcase from the one-hour direct flight Boston to Montreal last night, LOL!

Well they found it and said the bag would be delivered last night... which it wasn't. He called this morning and they said it would be delivered by 2pm this afternoon, of course still no bag... After another call he gets told they're too busy to say when they will deliver the luggage, sorry. It can be anytime today up until tomorrow morning.

So yeah, he's fuming... can't leave the house cuz they need a signature! One warm sunny day marred by incompetents (incompetence?).

But! Nevertheless!

I'm still mega-super-duper happy - life is a dream and I have to constantly pinch myself to be sure it's real: I'm not stuck in an office, I'm married to my best friend who happens to be the hottest guy evah, we move in six weeks to a dream place and I get to earn a living doing what I love best, in my own home!

That's not even including how lucky I am to have the friends I do, to enjoy health and a loving family, to live in an awesome country and all.

I might cry from happiness :-)

OK off to take a walk with the doggies and to go check out a sofa-bed thingie, I think we'll have pasta for dinner tonight and not talk about airlines.

*grin*

Oh and before I forget, I'll be handing out some blog awards this weekend so stay tuned for goodies!

Blown away: A narrow escape, in photos

Journey to see my mom today: failed.

Left home with a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach, as the howling winds practically pitched me over on my morning walk earlier with the dogs. Not good. Trees cracking and losing branches, gusts hurling big rocks everywhere.

Big winds = bad roads.

Crossing the big bridge off the island (yes Montreal is an island...) was like living through an earthquake in slow motion.

The St-Lawrence seaway beneath me thrashed with whitecaps as I held the steering wheel in a death grip, fighting nausea as the car swayed to and fro while surrounded by giant swaying semis threatening to topple over and squash me like a bug at any second.

My windshield now sports three big cracks thanks to flying debris.

About 50 minutes into the journey I decided this was lunacy, it would take me three hours to get there at this speed - my shoulders ached from the stress of trying to keep the car on the road and the wind had already pushed me near the ditch twice - what would it be like later when the rain hit?!

Called my mom, she had made it there with great difficulty and totally understood why I was turning around. Now I'm worried for her safety... told her to call me when she got home later today and until I get that phone call, I will be on pins and needles.

Why? Oh, keep reading...

I stopped to take a sugar and caffeine hit to calm my nerves:

Tried to document what the wind was doing to my hair (notice the deep frown? that was to try to keep the tears from streaming across my face):
Not five minutes into the journey back home, I crossed the first overturned semi:

Then another:

And another:

Times like these, I'm glad the voices yelled at me to be sensible... NOT a day to be travelling anywhere, specially for those like me who hate driving in the first place.

A landmark: Technoparc. He he.

Felt safe in the tunnel...

I hope the guy way up there called in sick today:

Anyhoo. Back home safe now, please send good vibes to my mom and to all the others out there so they make it home in one piece. Just hope Vegas' flight doesn't get cancelled tonight but if it does, I'd rather him home tomorrow than not at all.

Times like these, I wish I drank whiskey.

/end of Long Scary post/

Hairy Mary

There is no Mary and nothing hairy, I just liked the sound of it.

Better than the sound of pelting rain that's due this afternoon...

Bah, the gardens needed a good drink so I can't complain. Even if I don't have a garden yet. At least I have a car, which I'm about to hop into for a lovely visit with my mom and gramma - yes I know I talked about it yesterday but due to my old age, I'm allowed a few repeats.

It's in the fine print!

Yesterday's projects turned out better than I expected - w00t! The desk took three coats of paint and then a clear varnish to protect from scratches but overall, it's in much better shape than before. All it cost was a brush, a small can of varnish (most of it is left) and lots of elbow grease since I already had the paint.
Disassembled, lightly sanded and prepped:

...and below, the finished desk:

It will do nicely tucked away in one of the guest bedrooms... just need to find a chair to complete the set. The movers better not scrap my handiwork, LOL!

The two kitch lamps got cleaned and spray-painted (they look sooo much better now!), all I need is two funky lampshades and I'm all set! Of course Vegas will disagree but I promised to not put them in our "shared space" - he gets to put his creepy cow-tail whip and voodoo rainstick in his office, and I get to put my pink and black ceramic Ming figurine lamps in mine.

I hope they don't scare any prospective clients away.

In other news, I ate over two thirds of a huge bag of cheese chips for dinner last night. I think my blood pressure shot up since then and no matter how much water I drink, I ain't peein'. Ooops.

Stupid junk food addiction... how to kick the habit?

Help!

Contemplation

Everyone is born a king, and most people die in exile.
~Oscar Wilde, A Woman of No Importance, 1893

May I? Mais oui!

I love May... it's totally my favorite month of the year!

Nature is reborn under a veil of tender green, the earth comes to life, open windows let a fresh breeze sweep through stale living quarters and you can just go out in a t-shirt, shoes and a bare head.

Love, love, love it!

What I don't love, though, is chaos... This mess is a place. Everywhere I look there is a giant pile of stuff threatening to topple over but you know, for once it doesn't bother me, I know it's temporary. Being home all day relaxes expectations, I guess. Not to mention all the extra sleep I've been getting, reeeer!

I've got two projects on the go today:
add a coat of clear varnish to the freshly painted desk (will post pics of the finished deal tomorrow!) and spray-paint two gaudy lamps that I picked up last night.

He he. Vegas loathes them but I'll win him over yet...

Anyways they will be for my office so no matter what, I like them. New paint, new lampshades and voilà, a touch of whimsical! Life need not be boring, oh no ma'am.

I'm on the road for most of tomorrow, driving out east to meet my mom & gramma - of course rain is predicted because driving in a downpour is oh so fun, but what can ya do. I'll pack my favorite music, some snacks and hope to have enough energy in the evening to greet Vegas, who'll be back from Boston by then.

Did I tell you he put a pack of Laura Secord Milk Chocolate Fish under my pillow before he left?

Yeah, hims the best husband evah!

Oh and the bees are dying, it's so sad. I got out of the shower two nights ago and almost screamed at the giant bumble bee slowly crawling across the tile floor. It looked sluggish and drunk, no obvious injuries (nothing squished) and I have not a flipping idea how it got in my bathroom in the first place, or how long it had been there.

I took a glass, put it over the bee and slowly slid a piece of paper under the glass to trap it, then put it outside on the balcony window sill - figured it would be safe there for the night.

The next morning it was gone so I was relieved but later found the bee downstairs on the cement steps, stone cold dead.

Anyone else seeing bees die around them for no good reason?

Rabbit and the moon

"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in your joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."
Margery Williams - The Velveteen Rabbit, 1922

A conversation about pants

Vegas: Hun, are you going to do laundry this week while I'm away?
Me: I don't think so, why?
Vegas: I'm out of pants.
Me, trying to imagine husband at a training session in Boston with no pants: Um, how is that possible? Did you put them in the hamper? I did laundry five days ago and there were no pants left to wash!
Vegas: Yeah, I put everything in there...

*Vegas goes to rummage in laundry basket*

Vegas: There are about four pairs in here, not sure where all the others are...
Me: Hun four pairs of your pants don't even fit in that laundry basket!
Vegas: I need to buy more pants.
Me: I don't understand, how many pairs do you go through per week?
Vegas: Well at least seven or eight...
Me: What?
Vegas: Well yeah, specially when I train I use more-
Me, pointing at leg: Pants? Pant pants?!
Vegas: No, not jeans - pants.
Me, smacking self on forehead: You mean underwear!
Vegas: Well yeah, I guess so - but they're called pants.
Me: No, pants are pants and undies are undies!
Vegas: Underpants?
Me, laughing to hard to speak: ---
Vegas: In England we call those pants!
Me: We're not in England anymore, are we...

Moral of the story:

Men are from Mars. There are no laundry facilities on Mars.

Eating me alive

This city is slowly sucking the life out of me... it may be my impatience that's growing but I swear the traffic outside our place is louder, there are more people and more cars, the dirt and garbage are breeding and the flipping pothead neighbor's shitty speedmetal is about to drive me to the nuthouse!

Days like this I should have stayed in bed.

Poor Vegas - he wanted to spoil me before he left for Boston so we walked down to a terrasse (restaurant with outdoor seating) near our place but I had no appetite.

The blaring music made me want to stick a fork in my eye and despite the warm sun I fought claustrophobia in the cramped quarters... not to mention the stink of cheap italian vinaigrette that turned me green so I ended up watching him eat his pizza while my brain took a vacation.

On the upside I'm a model wife: cheap and quiet! LOL

My friend S is on her way - I've got double-layered nachos in the oven and Coronas chilling in the fridge so it should be a fun girlie dinner. We haven't seen each other in a year and a half, it's terrible how time flies!

I shall raise a toast to my patient husband who's now gone for three days, busy product manager that he is now. Train that brain, baby!

So far today has been about the dogs, trying to keep awake, organizing knick knacks, tidying up the house and sanding down a desk that I will paint tomorrow. It was a great find on craigslist (free!), I might post before and after pics later on.

In the meantime I will share my fabulous art-deco lamp with you - this piece will be an awesome addition to our "museum of cool" once we've moved and settled in a bit. I must admit that I am in total love with this gem - got it for a song from a girl who is moving to Vancouver, her step-mom had given it to her so who knows what's behind the history of this funky piece!

It may not be to everyone's taste but Vegas and I think it's the bomb! I wish it had a sister but oh well, some things are meant to be unique I guess.

Um, sorry for being so dull these days. I'm impatiently waiting for people to get back to me with stuff so that I can feel like progress is being made (business logo & branding, then the website, house renovations that were booked, etc). So frustrating! I want it all done yesterday, LOL!

All right, time to put on the lip gloss and pretend to be glamorous.

Us housewives have an image to maintain! ROTF!

Things

Things I love:
  • a cuppa burning hot coffee on a cold damp morning
  • the first baby green leaves on spring trees
  • coming home after a long day and slipping into comfy soft pyjamas
  • my doggies' happy dance when it's time for a walk
  • an interlude of silence
  • the scent of a wild salty sea and a rocky beach
  • when my husband calls me "sweetpea"
Things I wish I could love, but just don't:
  • a glass of warm cognac (so romantic but blecch!)
  • steak and kidney pie
  • big bustling crazy New York
  • most oscar-winning movies
  • a long run through the park
  • sports and politics
  • getting in the car and driving, driving
Things that make me laugh, but shouldn't:
  • mullets
  • midgets with mullets
  • failblog.org
  • people falling over or tripping down a flight of stairs
  • snotty bitches strutting out of public restroom with toilet paper stuck on a shoe
  • the drawings my hubby graces our fridge whiteboard with
Such are my scattered thoughts on this grey afternoon - is everyone else getting wet too?

When in a funk...

...crack open the joke book!

Here are the top five things that men know about women:

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

On days:

I think the thing I miss the most about working is enjoying Fridays. All days are pretty much a blur now, but I can make all of them Fridays so I guess it's a good thing. Sunday is Mother's Day, my mom's gone camping and I doubt my dogs are going to buy me flowers. They might pee on some but that's about it.

On getting duped:

I've been super lucky with craigslist and kijiji so far, but this morning I hit a bump in the road. Had an appointment on the other side of town to pick up a rocking chair, got there on time but got told "Sorry, someone came by an hour earlier and took the chair - wasn't it your husband?" WTF? It wasn't a misunderstanding, it was a fuckup! I was sooo pissed. So I went to the Walmart nearby and bought a bunch of stuff. Nerrr.

On angels & demons:

We all have guardian angels watching our backs and inner demons kicking our brains while we sleep. Nightmares. They aren't innocent female horses running in the dark.

On Romeo & Juliet:

I finally bought the Romeo & Juliet - The Music Edition DVD to replace my old VHS tape. I think tonight is a movie night. I need me some happy visuals.

On smart shopping:

It amazes me how some people shop blindly. They're not creative and then lament their empty wallets and piles of debt: duh! I'm not talking "buy secondhand" either, although it's always a smart choice for cars, furniture and other items (not food - LOL!).

Today I looked for cushion inserts and the cheapest were $9.47 for the size I wanted. Two rows over, same-sized brand-name cushions were on liquidation sale for $5 each (down from $15). Got me some snazzy discounted fabric and voilà, all the material I need to design my own cushions! I just hate paying full-price for stuff, what can I say? :-D

On chronic pain:

It sucks.

The fog settles in

Honeymoon's over.

Sigh.

Yep... I'm bored.

The weather stinks (cold, pouring rain) and with my wrenched back I can't do a damn thing. It's too soon to pack boxes, I can't bathe the dogs or do any heavy housework, I don't want to spend money shopping for stuff until we've actually moved and if I bake any sweets I'll tear into them and get fat and waaaaaaaaaah!

bored
bored
bored

At least there are fun toys online to play with... see?
Yeah, I'm all about the entertainment factor.

You get the craziest 80's B-movies on TV in the middle of the day, along with infomercial re-runs and stale talk-shows. Hurts the brain. Oh and it's still raining outside, hasn't stopped all day. Awesome.

bored
bored
bored

Vegas has been working like a dog since he got that promotion, so he's gone early and back late with a fried brain. Evenings consist of dinner, grunts, TV, xbox and then bed.

I try talking to my dogs but they just fart back at me.

I may die of boredom soon.

Aren't you sorry you wasted time reading this crap today?

Mirror, mirror, on the wall...

Beauty's sister is vanity, and its daughter lust.
~Author Unknown

A tale of serendipity

Got your hot cuppa coffee?

Then sit back and enjoy this one...

You may or may not know that I love horses and have always been fascinated by them. That we'll soon have our very own stable pleases me to no end and although I have a huge mountain of knowledge to dig through before I can do anything with it - isn't that what life is all about?

But I digress.

Last night I accidentally stumbled on this beautiful fella on craigslist and I knew I had to have him:

I wrote to the seller and asked if he would consider delivering it if he came to town one day, since I was a good 30 minutes drive away and considered it wasteful to burn all that gas for a $20 statue... He wrote back saying that actually, he had another delivery right next to my place in the morning so it would be no problem - how super is that? :-)

He didn't know anything about the statue since the previous owners left it in the house that he bought so it was really a blind purchase.

Sometimes I get so lucky, I could scream!

Turns out it's an antique wood-carved statue, covered in fine leather - you'd have to see it in person to appreciate the exquisite detailing. It suffered a few superficial paint drops along the way but I can remove those and with a bit of shoe polish it'll be good as new.

Am not sure what it's worth but it's a helluva lot more than the $20 I paid for it!
I'm in love and he needs a name... Any suggestions?

But wait, that isn't the story I want to tell you about... It starts with me chatting with this guy and he said he had a small rocking horse he was going to put up on craigslist but he'd rather show it to me first in case I was interested - cool with me!

We arranged for him to be at my place for 10:30am.

At 9:50am, my phone rings and he said he was just around the corner, so I threw on some clothes and ran downstairs to meet him. His name was Adam and he was every bit the nice gentleman that I had pictured him to be.

We were standing there on the sidewalk, with the side of his van open and the little wooden rocking horse inside, and I told him that I'd only take the statue since the other item should be put to good use, I was only looking for antiques and decorative items.

I'd just finished saying it would make a child very happy when a young lady pushing a stroller with two little girls in it stopped beside us, looked into the van and exclaimed "Oh! Isn't that beautiful!"

Adam and I looked at each other with disbelief.

"You mean the rocking horse?"
"Yes, it's just perfect!"
"Um, well it's for sale actually."

She looked at me, I nodded and explained that I was just buying the statue but didn't want the rocking horse so she asked how much, Adam said $20 so she fished the money from her pocket and was more than happy to take the toy for her two young children, who were screaming with delight.

You could have knocked both Adam and I down with a feather.

No doubt we'll both be telling this story for years to come, as it is one of those things that makes you believe in magic all over again.

Hope your day is also magical!

Wanna laugh?

OK this day has totally kicked me in the nads.

That hot chocolate? Milk boiled over in the microwave and the pouch of chockit ripped open the wrong way, covering my shirt with powdered crap.

The bedsheets tangled themselves into a giant humid lump in the dryer, I had to wait until Vegas got home for him to untwist the beast. In the process, my duvet cover sustained a large rip... s'ok, now that I have a sewing machine I can be Mrs Fixit until we can afford nice new stuff again.

I'll get to it eventually....

I also managed to tear a muscle in my lower back carrying those two bloody chairs up and down twisty stairs, now every micro-movement almost brings tears to my eyes.

Call me Gimpy McLimp.

Ah well, they were worth it... or they will be once we're done with them... eventually... someday!

Vegas and I decided to go all-out kitchy, we'll have them done in thick velour: one in leopard print and one in zebra, with hot-pink accent cushions! Woo!
No cat was harmed in the taking of this photo.

This was the craigslist advert, the chairs are mirror images of each other. Pretty funky, eh? They belonged to the girl's great grandmother and the loveseat looks a LOT better in the photo, the fabric is shot to hell. The wood will also have to be sanded down and re-varnished but that, I can do.

Someday... eventually!

/end of Mr Bean Meets Mr Murphy day/

Comes in bunches

Good things and bad things... in ramble-style it goes like this:

The two crazy hunting dogs chased a cat in the field this morning, only the poor thing didn't escape alive. I'll spare you the horrid details, makes me ill to think about it.

RIP little kitty...

Some asshole keyed our car the entire length of the driver's door. Awesome. I love this city. Third car, third time this happens - I give the fuck up.

The apartment still reeks of acrid smoke... stupid chicken pot pies had leaked their innards last week and I hadn't noticed, so when I put the sweet potato fries and the chicken in the oven to bake last night: smoke! Billowing, thick smoke! OMG I had to open every window and door to be able to breathe and the mofo dinner took over an hour to cook, now all our clothes stink as do the curtains, the linens, the couch... AAACK!

So guess who's doing laundry today.

I found two unique and awesome antique loveseats on craigslist last night and went to pick them up today, a real steal at $65 each - or so I thought...

The frames and woodwork are in good condition but the chairs are in serious need of re-upholstering, which I thought would run for about $100 or so each but nooo, I just got three quotes ranging from $400 to $550 for each!

It's sheer madness!

So off to the storage they go and after we've moved I'll find a local guy who can do them for cheap, stupid city and their extortionist prices! And if the cost of the job is still steep, we'll wait until we can afford it - they're so worth it, they're superbly funky.

Oh and I have a torn muscle in my lower back so I now walk with a limp.

Gimpy TD!

That would make a heck of a t-shirt, eh?

OK am craving chockit now and there's only a kitkat in the house, which I'm keeping to share with Vegas after dinner. Cuz I'm a really good wife and all that jazz. I'll go make a hot chocolate then and read for a bit, need to calm my nerves as it's been a helluva day so far.

Anybody else getting smacked by bunches?

Wows and woes

If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular?
~Source Unknown

What the?!

Where the hell did this day go?!

I didn't even get up that late and have been keeping busy ever since yet I look around me and see no evidence of anything tangible - well OK the bathroom is clean, the dogs are brushed and the dishes are done - still, WTF?

If at least the bra shopping had gone well but no, came home empty-handed.

My poor boobs need support!

Wearing a bright red bra under a white t-shirt just ain't my thing (I'm too old for that!), so I need to find another lingerie shop... but oh! They had such lovely sexy delicates, it was hard to walk away... Gaah. Being sensible sucks!

But sensible I shall be until I am earning money again.

Mutter.

If any of you are interested, I've re-activated my photography blog since I have a few pics to put up, not really any theme going on so it'll be a daily surprise. If I can find the time to bake some cookies, I'll post pics of that too!

Mmm cookies.

I wish I had something to blog about today but, as you can see, I got nada.

I'm low on sleep thanks to insomnia, I'm still searching for that perfect 2nd-hand couch that will grace my future office (read: hours of surfing the "for sale" ads on the net), I badly need a manicure but am too scared of those nail places to let them touch my hands and well, how boring do you want this post to get?

Wish me adventure, people!

'Tis a beaut of a day!

Another yummy weekend - yey!

How I love spring... Took the time to snap some bloomin' lovelies this morning while walking the furkids, aren't they pretty?
Mmmmagnolias!

My camera got greedy with the sudden orgy of colours... it's been gray, beige and brown for so long I think it went a bit nuts!

Under the Hissing Tree... LOL!

I'll post more pics later this week, I've got a ton! Or maybe just update my cobweb-covered photo blog, since I finally have things to photograph again - AMEN!

I think I'm slooowly learning to unwind... I sewed a bit on Friday and even if my cushion came out super lumpy thanks to the stupid filling, the stitching itself was well-done and I'm proud of my first effort. Just need to get a cushion insert and replace the innards this week, then I'll show you what it looks like (too embarassing with the lumps right now)!

Yesterday Vegas and I drove out to get two amazing display shelves for my new office (dark wood, glass and mirror - merci craigslist!), we indulged in Dirty Burgers after that and then spent a few hours playing pool with some friends - we lost more games than we won but it was fuuun!

Sticks! Balls! Beer! :-D

My belly's full of ice cream and it's time for a 3rd walk in the sun, then making Shake n'Bake chicken with spicy sweet potato fries, served with a green salad. It's all about the food, man, all about the food.

Funny though, I feel as if I'm losing a bit o'pudge.

Yey!

Factions

The world has achieved brilliance without wisdom,
power without conscience.

Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants.
We know more about war that we know about peace,
more about killing that we know about living.
~Omar Bradley

Social filters... or lack thereof

Can I take a moment to bitch here?

(rhetorical question, LOL)

I bumped into my obese dogsitter yesterday afternoon, on my way home after dropping the car off at the garage. I thought I looked okay in jeans and a short hoodie, yet his first words were "wow, you've gained weight!"

So many replies flew through my head yet none of them made it out:

giant pot calling the little kettle black?
ever think of not saying everything that flies through your head?
gee, thanks asshole - nice to see you too!

I've had it with that rude man. Every single time it's one thing or the other and frankly, the friendship is a joke. We've got nothing in common except that he likes our dogs and every interaction has become super stressful.

When we bought our house he asked how much we paid for it, and I said I wasn't at ease sharing that kind of information with people.

So what did he do?

He turned around and asked Vegas at the first chance he got.

Nice respect going on there, buddy.

I can't cook ("that slop you made last year was so awful I threw it out"), I can't raise my dogs, I can't keep my man happy, my hair needs coloring and his birthday gift was so bad he spent 15 minutes on the phone telling me why it sucked, and then all the gifts before that too.

Nevermind that we picked it with pride and spent a ton of money on it, plus the lovely wrapping and card which he said "was very ordinary".

Yeah, I'm done.

He can shove his miserable life up his arse and good riddance.

I'm not saying this out of anger, it's been going on for a while now and yesterday was just the proverbial straw that broke this camel's back. It actually feels good to put an end to something that was bringing me down.

Anyhoo.

It's Friday, I slept well (and got up late, too!) and today I will attempt to sew a cushion with the lovely fabric I purchased yesterday. Will also make a lovely veggie soup soup to make the place smell like home and pack three boxes in an attempt to make the impending move seem more tangible.

Did I mention how happy I am?
<--------------------------------------- THIS MUCH --------------------------------------->

(and then wrap that around the world a few times!)

Happy Friday, everyone!
