Last night I was feeding Dakotah aka melonhead at the dogsitter's, as usual, with the two other dogs around (my girl Maika and pitbull Byron), when suddenly with no warning BAM! Dakotah viciously attacked Byron.
145 lbs akita vs 70 lbs pitbull fight, right at my feet.
Can you say hell, stress, injuries?
Good thing Vegas was there, who managed to grab Dakotah after a few seconds while my dogsitter pulled off his dog - but not fast enough, my hand accidentally flew into Byron's mouth during the scuffle and I *saw* the teeth sink into my flesh... thought I was done for but surprisingly the skin did not break. It was a miracle... But ow, ow, ow.
Poor Maika just sat there watching the boys snarl it out while everyone was screaming, it's a good thing she did not jump in. Can you imagine?!
So yeah. The eve before we leave for a week and the three dogs are stuck in one small appartment, this crap happens. Now the boys, who have always been best of friends, cannot be trusted together anymore.
Poor Byron was in shock after the attack, he almost lost an eye (Dakotah bit him on the brow, the hole almost needed stitching but seems ok this morning despite the swelling). The pitbull also sports several bumps, bruises and missing lumps of fur while Dakotah has nothing except my utter disrespect now.
I know he's full of unspent energy and frustration, I know his leg hurts and he's been through alot the past few weeks.
I understand that he misses me and he was being possessive but hell! He is NOT allowed to act like such an ass, and he knows it.
He got crated after the incident and this morning I ignored him, just took him for his bio break and no petting. My patience has limits, specially with freaking browbeating I got from my stressed-out dogsitter.
Needless to say this puts a huge strain on our friendship with the dogsitter, I can't wait for August 24th when we can finally go away for our week by the sea with BOTH dogs and that will be the last day, and last time, we ask him to keep our dogs. We're on a mission to find a good kennel in September and will use it every time we leave the city from now on. Fuck this shit.
I just hope the rest of the day (week!) will go without major incidents.
Sigh. Take care, everyone.

I'm so sorry! I know how scary that is!
Oh geez I can't believe that.
Kennels are good, and maybe 2 dominnant breeds shouldn't be in that close proximity?
Mine just about kill each other all the time, I'm pretty used to it, but it's scary.
Omg, I don't know what to say. So so sorry to hear :( I hope Byron is okay :(
Ah, c'est la vie. He's not visiting anymore. He's living there. There's bound to be some turmoil until the living arrangements between themselves get sorted out. I guess Dakotah needs to relearn that he's not the alpha, regardless of the situation.
I still haven't found a good kennel...
Very scary. Yikes. I'm a little afraid of dogs too b/c I've never really been around them, so double yikes.
My cousin works at a kennel, she says it's great. I'll give you the name if you need it.
OMG! WTH? Why didnt he just attacked like that? That was freaky.
Yikes! I have been witness to a dog fight before now, and they are NOT pleasant!
Holy crap! I'm not familiar with akitas, but I know pitbulls are tough f*ing dogs! I'm not a fan and wouldn't live next door to someone who owned one, so I'm shocked melonhead did SO much damage!
A kennel would probably be a good for melonhead because he would have his own space. I know he wouldn't get the exersise you would like, but might let him relax more.
That would have been scary. I hate it when dogs fight but it happens at times. I wud be mad at Melonhead as well. But don't be too hard on him.
Dog fights suck but it happens. Unfortunately our beasts all can't get along. Email me if you want some input on some kennels. It'll probably be best if he's kenneled somewhere where he can get daily walks instead of play time with strange dogs.
Hope you're having fun in sunny California! :)
fed up I am in rainy Montreal. Bleh!
