OK here are some first photos of "the girls" - hate to use the flash to take pics but the coop lighting wasn't optimal thanks to all the dark weather we've been having... I'll take some outside pics next week once the girls are free ranging :) For now they're still getting acclimatized so they have to stay indoors for a few more days.
Here are the "three matildas", aka Lacy, Lily and Blossom. They're totally awesome, much friendlier and easier to handle than the other girls! They should be close to 3 months old now.
Miss Ginger here and her possy (the two black hens) decided they didn't like the little pipsqueak and started to attack her - they were close to killing the baby so I had to do something. Ginger is a Rhode Island Red and Cochin mix - should be a pretty good layer. She's the eldest and the biggest at over 3 months old.
Little pipsqueak aka Betty Boop, a Barred Plymouth Rock. Lovely hens when adult, she should also be a good layer (Silkies just look pretty, they don't lay so many eggs per week). Betty is close to one month old now, still a lot of growing to do before she can re-integrate the flock. She's in with the Silkies now since they leave her alone.
The Possy, aka Ginger, Pepper and Truffle (those two are a cross of Rhode Island Red and Barred Plymouth Rock - should also be excellent layers).
See the difference in size that a month in age makes? It's crazy! Betty will be gorgeous once her feathers grow in - right now she's gangly, LOL!
It will be great once the official coop is all repaired and the girls can be transferred there - they'll be able to go in and out as they please. Right now it's a period of adaptation, the setting isn't ideal (dirt floor so a LOT of dust) and there's the issue of little Betty, which should eventually pass. They're all still very human-shy, they don't know how to nest or perch and they don't know what snacks are. Hmmm. Maybe my chickens are retarded. LOL!OK break's over, time to continue with the laundry and the floor washing - got two layers of grout off the new basement tiles, two more washings to go.
Pain in the ass, why didn't anyone warn me about this!
*looks at dry shriveled hands*
Hope you all have a fantabulous Friday, do try to enjoy some time off for me! ha ha!

Ummm sweetie, I tried to tell you about house hell, but you weren't listening!
I believe I said something about "told you so"???
:P
I was only complaining about the mess that tiling makes - had no idea it was that much work to clean grout off, LOL! The rest is all fine, I expected it and love it :)
I love the silkies!!! They are so cute.
This little adventure should be fun...at least for us to read about!
Gloves Gloves Gloves!!! Save your hands.
Oh I love them, what great additions!
Get some lush products for your hands, oh how it does wonders!
poor Betty. I'm convinced she brings it on herself though :)
Busy Bee, yep I have my gardening gloves on almost all the time when I'm outside (goat leather, they're awesome) but inside I've been slacking... I did wear rubber gloves for the first time today though, they're hot pink :-D
Piper, Lush makes me ill... too strong perfumes, sadly. Too bad cuz they have GREAT stuff!! I do use tons of hand cream though, but what I need is a maid! LOL
Vegas, she does seem to like stirring up trouble... who knows maybe SHE is a HE!
You grout, then you let it dry like 5 mins and with a damp (not wet) sponge, you go over it gently, then let it dry as the package says. And then you clean it as soon as you are allowed. Grout is corrosive too, so wear gloves and if you leave it too long, it gets harder to clean on account of it being corrosive. ;)
Wear gloves!!!
Cute birdies. :) So... is there a fence around the coop? That locks? *blushes*
I gave up on scrubbing the grout and purchased a steam mop cleaner and voilà easy maintenance grout. The chicks are adorable
I really didn't know chickies could be so pretty!
Prin, the thing with renos is you learn by just doing it, eh? Oh, we're learning! LOL As for the coops, both are fully secure buildings (with high windows encased with chicken wire, at night they are closed off). The outside pen is fully secure with chicken wire so no predators can get in. I'll post pics soon!
Zedder, I got a steam mop and it's absolutely shit. I got the wrong brand! :(
ModernMom, I didn't know there were hundreds of chicken breeds either until very recently!
hi techno, thanks for caring and asking about my situation. yes, it's about my daughter, i am trying to work things out with her but it has been very difficult. i'll let you all know what happens.
love the silkies.
c
You can always ask first. :D Just don't go learnin' yourself into cancer or something. Tubes and wires or not, I'll still kick your ass if that happens. ;)
They're so pretty.
Lovely chicks you have there :)
The chicks are adorable! can't wait to hear more tales of them as they get older and what not.
Poor lil Betty gettin' picked on. Why do the littles ones always get picked on? ;o)
C, am glad that your heart is on the mend. I worry about you sometimes!
Prin, will you be my candy striper first?
Katie, thank you :)
Lady B, they're still babies... they should grow to be nice puffballs when they're all grown up!
Kathryn, the silkies have adopted Betty but the other 3, Ginger and the Ninjas... gaah! They're older and can get away with it I suppose?
This is the funniest thing ever...you have chickens!
Interesting!
Thanks for sharing.
