Wow, that was weird

My body decided to quit on me today.

Woke up feeling normal, still a bit blue but the weather's been terribly heavy lately - the sky a cold gun-metal gray shedding frozen dandruff over soggy land - it just makes the soul ache, you know?

The flock was happy to see me, as usual, but NOT happy to be stuck inside all day on account of the freezing wet weather. I was kneeling down, petting the baby silkies when I noticed some blood on the fresh bedding - uh oh. After inspection, it was my little Angel who had somehow nicked her toe on something and was bleeding quite badly, as evidenced by the patch of blood on my jeans and smeared all over my coat.

Great.

I brought her inside and as I stood at the kitchen sink in coat and hat, my girl in one hand and a wet paper towel in the other, trying to clean the wound to see what the problem was and applying multiple coats of styptic powder, I began to feel pretty weird.

Hot, dizzy, nauseous, sweaty, shaky and jello-y.

What the heck??

I took off my hat and unzipped my coat but it got worse, the light started to dim and my vision blurred.

Thoughts that zipped through my head:

Great. Low blood pressure.
I'm going to faint.
With a tiny bleeding chicken in my hands.
And three big curious bird killers loose in the house.
Must. Protect. Little. Angel.
Faaaaaaaaaack!

I made it to the dog crate in the corner of the dining room, put her inside and locked the door before collapsing, rolling on my back and sticking my legs up on a chair like my mom had taught me to do years ago when this happened.

No idea what brought this on.

After about 10 minutes I was OK to get up, fetch Angel (who had bled all over the dog's white blanket) and bring her back to the coop in the hopes that she would settle down and the bleeding would eventually stop (it did).

The rest of the day was a struggle to stay vertical, care for the dogs and the flock and get big house chores done, it was a pig sty in here.

The property appraiser is here at 9am tomorrow so it's not like I could put things off, you know? Before you all yell at me! LOL

My camera also goes off to the shop for a major re-haul on Thursday, so I need to get this place spotless, staged and photographed before then. Upstairs is all done, just need to get the main floor under control tomorrow afternoon to wrap things up...

...and then...

Our house goes on the market.

GULP!

Exciting times, busy times, happy times. Except for little dramas, like my favorite tiny rescue chick Faith spraining her leg today so she might have to be brought into the house if she's not better tomorrow (waaaah!).

Speaking of chicks, last night I candled the eggs my little Blossom is sitting on and there is ONE definite embryo so far and a couple more that are "possibles", we'll know more in a week. Eeeeeek!

I need a bigger coop.

Yep, time to sell this place and move on.

I'm glad you are feeling better. I've never had that happen, but sounds like a scary experience.

Sometimes, things just have to get done. As I say, this separates the adults from the children. I understand. Also, I am Type A, so you probably shouldn't listen to me.

Glad your chickies are ok, too!

Gee I hope you feel better. Maybe you should see a doctor? I have had episodes like that with sweats, shakes, dizziness, etc. and was diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia...something to mention to a doctor maybe?

Rebecca, I procrastinated yesterday so I paid for it dearly today, LOL! That'll teach me... :-o

Sweet T, I get hit with hypoglycemia quite often (my mom has it too) and most of the time it can be explained, however the episode this morning was just plain weird. My blood tests from 2 months ago were all clear, too. Grrrr.

Are you sure your okay. That was pretty scary.

scary! have you ever had problems with panic or anxiety attacks? Just seems like you have a lot going on so it doesn't seem entirely out of the question. Hope it doesn't happen again.

Yeah my reactive hypoglycemia couldn't be diagnosed with a normal panel of blood tests. I had to see a specialist and get some other tests done. Mine used to come at the weirdest times too...
Ask your doc to send you to an endocrinologist maybe?

You have quite a full plate of chores TD. I hope you are feeling back to your normal energized self today!! It sounds like those girls are going to be more of a job than the dogs. They are lucky to have you. Good luck with the new chickie. New babies are good!

yep i am thinking hypoglycemia too. diane has it. if it happens again be sure to grab some orange juice or candy bar to get you through then eat a sandwich once it passes so the carbs will kick in.
poor lil chickies... at least they have you to care for them.

take care, hon..

Hope you are feeling better . . . I get the same feeling when my blood sugar is low - like Sweet T mentioned - as I am hypoglycemic. Sometimes I have episodes that just aren't expected and are worse than others - I actually just had a similar episode to yours this past weekend. I got out of the shower and immediately was naseous, shaky, dizzy, out of sorts. No good. Has your eating been off in any way?

Hope the chickies are doing better.

Happy Tuesday.

Just Breathe, yeah all is good today *knock on wood*!

Surfergrrl, it really was just a sudden drop in blood pressure, most probably due to hypoglycemia. Not sure WHY it happened out of the blue like that though :-/

Sweet T, if it happens again I'm going back to my family doctor for more tests - imagine this happens when I'm driving on the highway or something?? Jeez louise!

Busy Bee, yep was full of beans today and back to normal, got a bunch of stuff done and it felt great! The chickens are another matter... the coop is just not practical as it is, so frustrating. temps are plummeting for the next 10 days and those chicks are cold!

C, I had a granola bar and a soda right after for the sugar, good lord I'm falling apart! LOL!

Kathryn, geez! Take care, woman! Do you carry glucosamine pills in your purse? I used to need them all the time, it's better now...

Lady B, it really was a blood sugar low (unexplained circumstances). Good thing I was home and not driving or anything!

Time to update that life insurance policy...

Or get one... :-o

Always carry sugar with you. That's what I do. I have chocolate or candies everywhere in the jeep, at work, etc.
Hopefully it doesn't happen again.

TD - no, don't carry pills. Just try to be as vigilant as possible with respect to eating. And eating healthily.

That's why I finally went to the dr back when I was dying- I nearly passed out while driving. Don't be a Prin Boo. ;)

I have the best endo evar if you want him. :)

Sweet T, spoke to my mom (she's a nurse) and it's not hypoglycemia. Such an episode happened to her too just last week! A rapid plummet of BP, I forget what the medical term for it is - sigh.

Kathryn, me too but I got so scared a few times that I had to do something. It saved my butt a couple of times.

Prin, what does an endo do actually? Am curious now! Silly bodies. Pfft!
