Why I hate petfood companies (mega rant!)

What a dispicable disgrace.

If you've done your research thoroughly and know what you're feeding your dog and that's acceptable to you - then fine. I'm not here to dispute that (ask Prin!).

What I am furious about is the gall of these giant conglomerates transforming industry waste and byproducts into "pet food" and fleecing unsuspecting pet owners with clever marketing spins and bullshit - poisoning our cats and dogs while lining their pockets with your hard-earned money and laughing all the way to the bank. I throw most vets into this bin of toxic waste too - bunch of pushers.

Here is a perfect example of what I'm talking about:

This poison, concocted and peddled by Del Monte Foods, is only one dog food in a sea of hundreds. All those brands of cat and dog food lining the shelves of your grocery store, Walmart, drugstore, home hardware store - you name it - in colorful bags, cans and pouches = toxic waste. If you see a brand advertised on TV, in a magazine or peddled by your vet: toxic waste. Don't touch it, don't throw another penny at it, run away screaming. The health, longevity and quality of life of your beloved pet depends on it.

Learn to read and interpret the ingredient labels and never mind the clever hype, marketing and endorsments from breeders, vets and the like for crappy food - if they knew what they were really feeding they would no doubt have a heart attack (mind you, some people just don't care while stuffing their faces with Burger King and Twinkies).

Want a quick lesson? Here is the link to the food mentioned in the video: Kibble n'Bits

Wow. Looks good and sounds great, right?

When it comes to mealtime, dogs always want what you’re eating. Now there’s New Kibbles 'n Bits HomeStyle dog food. It has the look and taste of people food, with tender meaty pieces like they were carved right off the bone, crunchy Kibbles and wholesome vegetables. Plus, it provides 100% complete and balanced nutrition. It’s the great-tasting dog food that makes mealtime more enjoyable for both you and your pet.

Why, I'd almost eat this stuff myself! But oh, wait... let's look at the ingredients:

Corn, soybean meal, ground wheat flour, beef & bone meal, animal fat (BHA used as preservative), water sufficient for processing, corn syrup, wheat middlings, soy flour, animal digest, wheat gluten, propylene glycol, salt, hydrochloric acid, chicken, potassium chloride, caramel color, titanium dioxide, sorbic acid (used as a preservative), choline chloride, sodium carbonate, minerals (ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, manganous oxide, copper sulfate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite), dried carrots, vitamins (vitamin E supplement, niacin supplement, vitamin A supplement, d-calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement), calcium sulfate, potassium sorbate (used as a preservative), yellow 6, yellow 5, BHA (used as a preservative), dl-methionine, red 40.

Wow. Let me put that into laymen's terms for you:

Cheap indigestible filler, cheap indigestible filler, cheap indigestible filler, cheap beef byproducts (wow! some form of meat!), mystery fat (preserved with a proven carcinogen), water, sugar, filler (think: peanut shells), cheap indegestible filler, glue, chemical, sale, chemical, - wait, what's this? a meat! wow!, mineral, color, more minerals and preservatives, bla bla bla, - wait, what's this? a vegetable of sorts! wow!, more artificial vitamins and minerals, chemicals, food coloring.

I don't know about you, but somehow I don't know how you could fool a dog to think this resembles "people food" in any way, shape or form. What wholesome vegetables? A dried carrot which makes up about 2% of the recipe? What tender meaty pieces? It's sugar, glue and flour! And don't think for a minute that the "beef" or "chicken" in this food has anything to do with what you and I eat: it's beaks, feathers, intestines, heads, feces, stomaches, udders, lips and assholes, tumors, you name it.

This is not food, it's a joke and a disgrace. Shame on them!

If you feed Whiskas, Cesar, Ol'Roy, Dog Chow, Iams, Purina anything, etc etc... I hope the above has made you think a bit and want to investigate... I dunno about you, but I want to use my hard-earned dollars to feed my beloved pets real food, not toxic waste in a fancy bag or cute can.

Peace, out.

titanium dioxide is in paint.
Animal digest and animal fat might be dogs and cats.

Sigh. :( How do they sleep at night?

Probably on expensive goosedown pillows :-(

I'd love to feed these monsters a steady diet of this shit for a month and see how they fare.

They would be sick as... dogs.

I’ve been feeding my little guy Nutro cat food since he was a kitten and I feel pretty confident about it. As far a packaged, prepared food I think that's probably one of the best ones available on the market for dogs too. The list of ingredients seems sound to me and the fact that it can't be bought in superstores is reassuring as well.

What`s this terrible picture doing here? Why can`t you see dead puppies?.... Why dead kitties????? :)))

It's just freakin frustrating :(. Hopefully the new regs they are talking about will help squash some of that false claims and advertising crap. Keep spreading the message!

Smiler, actually, Nutro isn't. Costco's Kirkland brand is actually better than Nutro, despite being far cheaper, but both are near the middle of the pack.

The better cat foods are ones like Evo, Felidae, Solid Gold, and Nature's Variety.

Those companies make pretty good dog foods too. ;)

my dogs are spoiled. they eat what i eat and they sometimes get some "filler" dry food for when I'm not home to feed them.

Usually it's also wet food - it smells like MRE's. Frankly, I ate crap that looked like that in the army. Can't be that bad for 'em. right??? I bet you you're gonna tell me that i'm sooo wrong, huh? lol

Smiler, Prin is right...

Nutro contains corn by-products (essentially: glue), soy products, artificial stool hardeners and an awful lot of fibrous fillers... they do not use human-grade ingredients either.

Cats cannot digest corn nor soy, so essentially they poop it out while never absorbing any of the nutrients. Plus, these ingredients are the #1 cause of allergies.

Just thought you should know ;-)

F.Angel, I searched high and low but it's the only thing I found, LOL!

TeriM, I will never shaddap about it ;-)

Katana, if more people fed their pets like you do yours, alot of vets would go out of business. *high five*

Fuck. I don't get it. I walked into the pet store on the corner of Greene where they have the best of everything for the Westmount crowd and asked them for the BEST cat food. I do remember feeding Lola Solid Gold, me semble. I'm peever. But thanks for the info.

Smiler, these companies spend millions on marketing and competition is fierce.... shop owners, unfortunately, are in business to sell what makes the most profit (via company spiffs, freebies, pushy reps...) so don't feel bad!

we all want what is best for our little buggers and yes, it is infuriating to find out we've had the wool pulled over our eyes.

check this out for kicks:
